Behind the school, on the slag heap, you name it” to avoid mentioning any names, because in truth, Katniss was the only girl he had ever kissed. Katniss had just told him that every time she had kissed Peeta, it felt wrong because of him, so Gale purposely lied to her so that she would finally be able to let him go and love Peeta, and would never feel guilty again. He did it because he knew he would never be able to compete with Peeta, and most importantly, because he loved her. And he knew Peeta would take good care of her, probably better than he ever could.
